"Einstein said, when I ask a question
and I get a simple answer, I'm talking
to God. Within my own life, I've found
that when people use complexity, they
are actually trying to obscure reality
to keep their position of power"
During
the 2002 Toronto
International Film Festival I had
the unique opportunity to sit down by
the pool at the Four Seasons Hotel for
a relaxed interview with one of my favourite
film personalities, acclaimed Irish director
Jim Sheridan.
His films have achieved popular and critical
acclaim throughout the world, gathering
13 Academy Award nominations and winning
2 Academy Awards as well as numerous prestigious
international awards. In an age where
we are inundated with films that rely
on special effects, sex, violence and
predictable formulaic story lines, it's
a special treat to see a Jim Sheridan
film because you know you will see some
fascinating characterizations, resulting
in some of the big screens most memorable
performances (Daniel Day Lewis, Brenda
Frisker, Richard Harris). Perhaps that
is why they call him " the actor's
director".
As we sat down to talk about latest film
"In America", a semi-autobiographical
story of his own life, I could not help
but be charmed by his wonderfully down
to earth, self-deprecating candour.
